Picture of Month – Reconstruction 2 by John Urmson

‘Reconstruction 2’ by John Urmson (1974) Oil on board

ImageChosen by David Lindsay, member of Friends of Northampton Museum and Art Gallery.

This painting by John Urmson shows Northampton in the midst of construction and improvement. Part of a pair it shows the construction of the Grosvenor Centre, an appropriate choice as big changes are coming up for the Grosvenor Centre again in 2012.

The building on the right of the picture is Welsh House, now Yorks Travel Agents, which was built in 1595 and was one of the few building to escape the Great Fire of Northampton in 1675. The old building provides a stark contrast to the new and progressive building being built next to it.
