A very early pair of spiked running shoes from The Shoe Collection at Northampton Museums rubbed along side the feet of such world-renowned athletes as Kriss Akabusi, Haile Gebrselassie and Denise Lewis at the England Athletics Hall of Fame and National Awards night at the Birmingham Metropole hotel on Saturday 22 October.
These rare early spikes were put on display along side the spike running shoe collection of Job King who works for England Athletics.
The shoes are a pair of men’s black leather running spikes. They were made by Thomas Dutton & Thorowgood Ltd in the early 1860s. They are thought to have been worn by the Earl Spencer, Northampton at the time or by one of his family.
